Honoring the Life and Legacy of Dr. Jonathan Finlay

Dr. Jonathan Finlay

The IronMatt family is deeply saddened to share the passing of a revered clinician, pioneer in pediatric neuro-oncology, and devoted friend of our foundation, Dr. Jonathan Finlay.

Dr. Finlay served on the IronMatt Medical Advisory Committee (MAC) for years, taking on the role of Committee Chair in August 2017 before concluding his tenure in 2025. During his time with us, his expertise, leadership, and unwavering commitment to pediatric brain tumor research helped shape our mission and guide our grant funding toward meaningful, life-saving clinical progress.

Throughout his remarkable career, Dr. Finlay was a giant in medicine. At a time when cranial radiation was accepted as an unavoidable standard of care, he dared to challenge conventional approaches.

Through his groundbreaking “Head Start” clinical trials, he pioneered high-dose chemotherapy regimens supported by stem-cell rescue, demonstrating that young children could be cured while avoiding the debilitating, lifelong neurocognitive effects of radiation. His clinical trials fundamentally transformed treatment protocols worldwide and gave thousands of children the chance to grow up, heal, and thrive.

Beyond his scientific triumphs, Dr. Finlay brought vibrant energy, warmth, and relentless compassion to every conversation. He mentored generations of oncologists and stood as an empathetic advocate for families navigating the unimaginable weight of a pediatric brain tumor diagnosis.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, colleagues, and the global medical community mourning this profound loss. Dr. Finlay’s legacy can be seen in every child who was spared the harsh tolls of treatment and every family gifted hope when they needed it most.

We are forever grateful for his dedication to IronMatt and the fight to cure pediatric brain cancer.
